Cuba to help DR reduce HIV prevalence

Santo Domingo.– Cuba’s Sexual Education Center (Cenesex) director Mariela Castro said that Cuba’s HIV prevalence is 0.1% percent, which makes the neighboring island one of the countries with the lowest rates in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Castro Espin praised the work of the HIV-AIDS Council (Conavihsida), directed by Dr. Victor Terrero, but said that a single entity can not change reality, concerning the epidemic.

In that sense, Castro said that since Cuba maintains strong cooperation ties with more than 100 countries in education, health and other areas, her country is willing to work with the Dominican Republic on the prevention of HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases (STD).
