Canada welcomes new regularization law in DR

Santo Domingo.– Canada Ambassador Georges Boissé welcomed the signing by the Dominican President Danilo Medina of the new law which provides a mechanism to regularize the situation of foreign illegal immigrants, most of whom are of Haitian origin.

The message was released Thursday and it is also signed by Gilles Rivard, Canadian Ambassador to Haiti. The note reads: "Canada sees in this new law a step in the right direction, and a clear indication of the concern of the Dominican Republic in respect of Human Rights and its international obligations".

"Canada will follow with interest the implementation of regulations related to the law, which will also open together with the decree of regularization of illegal migrants adopted in November, access to naturalization of unregistered persons who were born in the Dominican Republic," the joint note reads.
