Environment: Boat spills molasses at Barahona Port, no damage

Santo Domingo.- The Environment Ministry on Monday said a boat from Puerto Rico that ran aground at Barahona port (southwest) last week didn’t cause any marine or environmental damage.

It said the minor spill at El Cayo beach was molasses, "an organic material which poses no risk of environmental pollution.

It said the Environment Ministry technicians and biologists who’ve been at the site since last week determined that the liquid spilled at the beach didn’t impact marine species or harmed the ecosystem. "Everything is under control… some tanks on the barge moved during the transfer of materials which leaked a small portion of organic material to the water on the beach."

In a statement, Environment added that once the operations were concluded, the boat returned to Puerto Rico, its place of origin.
