Dominican Republic’s most famous inmate freed on parole

Santo Domingo.- Dominican Republic’s most famous inmate was released on parole by the San Cristóbal Sentencing Court, which hand down its ruling at 12:00pm Friday.

It was Sobeida Félix’s third request for parole.

Judge Willys de Jesús Núñez headed the hearing on the request by Felix, who’s serving five years in prison for laundering money for her paramour, Puerto Rican kingpin José Figueroa Agosto.

Although de Jesus was to rule on the request last Wednesday, the Court cited "technicalities” leading to its suspension.

Prosecutors Jesús Fernández and Faustino Pulinario didn’t oppose house arrest for Felix to serve the rest of her sentence of 5 years and four months.

The Court ruling orders Felix to comply with “several rules until she fulfills the one year remaining in her sentence.”

“The inmate has complied with regulations and has shown remorse for her crime and no negative attitude,” says the ruling read out in the hearing.

"Oh God, you’ve made me famous," Felix told reporters as she was being escorted out of the courtroom. “I feel good.”
