The UN lauds the country’s gun-control effort

Santo Domingo.- The UN Regional Center for Peace, Disarmament and Development in Latin America and the Caribbean (UNLIREC) praised the Dominican Government’s practice of engraving firearms and of taking their owner’s fingerprints and a ballistics test to control the weapons in the hands of civilians.

During the last 10 years the Interior and Police Ministry requires the engraving of all weapons when their owners request or renew a license, and a ballistic test to keep a file on each firearm.

During a meeting with Interior deputy minister for Arms Control Ricardo L. Rosa Chupany, UNLIREC director Melanie Regimba also lauded the operations to destroy illegal weapons seized from civilians.
