Colleagues turn on feisty Dominican deputy for seeking probe

Santo Domingo.- Deputy Minou Tavárez Mirabal on Wednesday said the fact that her colleagues launched an investigation against her for allegedly violating articles of its bylaws reveals the country’s political crisis.

“So now, the one who has to be submitted to the Disciplinary Council for an investigation is to the one who’s calling for the probe, and that for me is simply one demonstration of the political crisis we’re living through,” Tavarez said, noting that it also reconfirms her decision that it was time to resign from the ruling party (PLD) .

The article stipulates sanctions for deputies who slander the Chamber or some of its members.

She reiterated that the Chamber failed to respond to her complaint of procedural violation in the passing of the bill to amend several articles of the criminal procedural code. “I’ll always vote for good legislation and when there’s a bill that jeopardizes the interests of Dominicans, I’ll raise my voice as high as required."
