Ex President’s press chief escalates Dominican ruling party’s infighting

Santo Domingo.- Former Presidency press director Rafael Núñez on Thursday blamed political sectors for the alleged plan that seeks the “head” of former president Leonel Fernández, a statement which adds escalates the ruling party’s infighting even further.

Nuñez, a close collaborator of Fernández, said it’s unfortunate that Justice minister Francisco Domínguez serves those sectors to hurt the former president’s image.

"Prosecutor Domínguez Brito has been persuaded by a group of fellow journalists whom he meets with periodically with the idea that before launching an eventual candidacy, he should do so in grand fashion, such as leaving the post with an image that is highly valued for his actions," he said.

"And one way to leave highly valued by the public is by bringing all of the Justice Ministry’s power to bear against Félix Bautista, a collaborator of Fernández," he said.

Nuñez said a group of PLD journalists constantly advise Domínguez and whose only goal is to undermine party unity, and some of them secretly serve the candidacy of also former president Hipolito Mejia, passing information and cooperate to bolt the party from power.

"These people worked against Danilo Medina’s path to the Presidency , but this time want to halt the man who boasts the strongest electoral push in the PLD, which has given him five victories and contributed to a sixth in 2012," the journalist said.
