Dominican Republic’s ‘most daring’ breakout: 5 dead (Update3)

Santo Domingo.- Justice minister Francisco Dominguez said the deceased in wake of what he called Dominican Republic’s most daring escape attempt," are Jorge Luis Polanco Diaz, who was serving 30 years; Andy Maríñez Alcántara, head of a ring which allegedly plotted the breakout; Jesús Féliz Narciso “Atahualpa,” the ring’s second-in-command, and inmate Álvaro Luis Capellán.

Justice Ministry PR Tessie Sánchez said a separate escape attempt at the prison in La Victoria left one person dead, but didn’t specify whether an inmate or a guard.

FILE. An unspecified number of people were shot and killed and several hurt at Najayo prison near the southern Dominican Republic city of San Cristobal, where heavily armed men tried to break out one or several Colombians being held on drug trafficking.

Local media report 4 inmates died and more than 10 escaped, and several others hurt, two prison guards among them. The injured were taken to San Cristobal’s Juan Pablo Pina Hospital

Justice minister Francisco Domínguez is at the correctional facility, which houses nearly 2,000 inmates.

Numerous medical and law enforcement first responders have been arriving at the high security prison.
