Key suspect ‘blessed’ Uzi in deadly prison assault

Santo Domingo.- Gilberto de la Cruz, the lawyer for Miguel Angel Nuñez ‘El Cojo’ (limp) on Monday confirmed that his client was the person who smuggled the guns into Najayo Prison prior to the failed but deadly jailbreak, as the authorities affirm.

Meanwhile Luis Carela, attorney for Juan Carlos Cuello ‘El Brujo’ (warlock) said the only thing his client did was "santiguar" (bless) the Uzi submachine gun used in the assault.

"Juan Carlos is dedicated to witchcraft, he’s a warlock, everyone knows him, a guy who has an altar, widely known in the community. A weapon was taken to him, an Uzi to be anointed in his ritual process and that’s what he did," he said.

He said it was Lowlly Rodriguez, also linked to the case, who brought the gun to Juan Carlos’ altar, who claims to be shaman in the town of Haina.

"Some of the persons indicted have no responsibilities in the case,” Carela said, adding that "not everyone who took part is there, and not everyone who is there took part.”
