Chikungunya cases reach 1 million mark in the Americas

Santo Domingo.– The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) revealed in its latest tally that the number of suspected and confirmed autochthonous or locally acquired cases of chikungunya is 1,011,548, up nearly 36,000 cases from last weeks report.

According to the report, released Friday, the Dominican Republic, after not reporting new cases for weeks, saw 25,381 additional cases reported to the UN agency.

The country accounts for slightly more than half (51.8 percent) of all local transmission cases seen in the Western hemisphere with 524,297 total to date, exactly one year after the mosquito borne virus made its first appearance in the Western hemisphere.
