Popular lawmaker goes stag to avert politicos’ ‘repetition of fraud’

Santo Domingo.- Independent deputy Minou Tavarez Mirabal had taken a bold step last year when she decided to resign from Dominican Republic’s ruling party PLD, where she forged her political career, to avert the “repetition of fraud.”

Quoted by diariolibre.com, the lawmaker reiterated on Thursday that she’ll found the new political organization, “Democratic Option.”

Tavarez said the party is being formed with a main challenge of complying with the requirements to achieve the Central Electoral Board’s recognition.

She said the organization is now collecting signatures and garnering support nationwide. "We expect to meet these requirements this year and set up a list of candidates who are competitive and a real contribution to the changes that the country needs."

She added that she expects the party’s rank-and-file will spearhead the political changes needed in the country. "It’s an effort by those who believe that the current political players just mean continuity, repetition of fraud and progressive weakening of democracy and its fragile institutions."
