Aftershock kills 2 miners in Dominican southwest, Listin

Barahona, Dominican Republic.- Two men died from a landslide in the salt mine at Puerto Alejandro, Jaquimeyes township Wednesday morning, just 24 hours after a 4.7 quake shook Dominican Republic’s southwest, outlet listin.com.do reports.

Salvador García (Siquete), 65, and Edgar Batista, 35, died when they were crushed by several sacks of salt while working in the mine, said Jaquimeyes town council director Fleuris -Quinquito- Matos by phone. A third person is also allegedly missing, though unconfirmed thus far.

One victim died at Mota Regional Hospital and the other in the mine, Matos said, adding that a 3 magnitude aftershock of Tuesday’s tremor caused the deaths.
