Foreign Ministry admits charging high fees, vows to strike them

Santo Domingo.- Foreign minister Andrés Navarro on Monday admitted that consulates charge excessive fees and vowed to eliminate them.

He agreed with recent criticism abroad that Dominican consulates are abusing with the fees charged to users. "That’s one of the first administrative measures we took because the Dominican population shouldn’t go to a government window, and not surmount situations because of high fees."

Navarro, speaking on Telesistema, Channel 11, said the consulates have been notified to establish reasonable fees for their services, "because there’re fees established from her, which are basic to maintain service that cannot be changed, creating problems for the Dominican population."
