Political maverick says opposition leader embezzled RD$1.2B

Santo Domingo.- Opposition party PRD leader Guido Gomez on Monday filed embezzlement and breach of trust charges against organization president Miguel Vargas and two other officers, at the National District Office of the Prosecutor.

The political maverick alleges that the three PRD senior leaders “irregularly” handled RD$1.2 billion from 2009 to 2012 based on personal criteria and transactions in the millions of dollar without a call for tenders, in violation of the Purchasing and Contracting Law 340.

Among the alleged irregularities Gomez cited a RD$25.0 million purchase of vehicles, without a call for tenders, and the alleged use of RD$200.0 million on billboards and ads, also without a call for tenders

Also accused were PRD finance chief Ramón Sánchez and auditor Rafael Espinal.
