Protesters on donkeys demand tourist road rebuild: El Caribe

Santiago, Dominican Republic.- On horses, donkeys, mules, vehicles, on foot and even in chains, residents of several villages staged an unusual protest to demand reconstruction of the Luperon tourist road, which links Santiago and Puerto Plata.

Elcaribe.com.do reports that grassroots groups, community organizations and transport unions complain that president Danilo Medina and Public Works minister Gonzalo Castillo had broken their promise to work on the route.

The protesters covered around 40 kilometers starting at the billage of Yásica, near Puerto Plata, and plan to reach Santiago.

"We’re lacking the leaders and legislators of the two provinces and that’s why we’re suffering," said driver union member Cesar Mezquita. Several police vehicles escort the protesters.
