Power plant blast blacks out Dominican Republic

Santo Domingo.- A blast Saturday night at a power plant in Haina (south) and damage to two others knocked out electricity in the entire country for at least eight hours.

The chain of blackouts that began shortly after 6pm near the capital plunged the rest of the country into total darkness by around 10:30pm.

Local media report that power had been restored to most sectors in Santo Domingo by 7am.

Dominican Republic’s State-owned electric utility (CDEEE) Saturday night tweeted that crews were fixing the problem and investigates the origin of the blast.
