Dominican politicos peddle govt. posts, candidacies

Santo Domingo.- Appointments to government posts by president Danilo Medina of leaders of Dominican Republic’s second-biggest opposition party (PRD) are imminent, as the agreement reached with the ruling PLD party stipulates, and include guarantees of repeat municipal and congressional candidacies for next year’s elections.

Although the source quoted by elnacional.com.do didn’t specify whether the positions are cabinet-level ministries or national agencies, they said the PRD will “soon become part of Medina’s administration,” as is the case of senior leaders of the conservative party, PRSC.

In addition to appointments of PRD leaders, some of the minority BIS party can also expect government posts, according to its president José Francisco Peña Guava.

Medina’s agreement with PRD president Miguel Vargas included support by that party’s deputies to pass the reform of the Constitution which restores the possibility of a sitting president’s reelection.
