Dominican Republic´s ruling party resorts to polls to tap candidates

Santo Domingo.- Thetop echelon of Dominican Republic´s ruling party (PLD) on Monday approved toendorse the nominations of its mayors which surveys show a 10% or higher than theother hopefuls.

Political Committee alsoestablished that if the mayor isn’t a member of the PLD, that candidacy will thenbe determined by a convention.

"We will supportthe candidate of the allied party or organization with which we have reached anagreement," said Lidio Cadet, coordinator of the PLD National ElectoralCommission.

He said there willalso be primaries in those places where the survey show that support for the incumbentmayor is below that of any rival.
