Dominican roads being filled with bodies: Catholic Church

Santo Domingo.- TheCatholic Church on Thursday warned that Dominican Republic´s roads "are beingfilled with bodies" from wrecks and proposed that start of an urgent drivereducation campaign in schools.

The clergy regrets thatDominican society has witnessed the dramatic jump in accidents in recent monthswith tragic results.

"What is happeningwith the epidemic of traffic accidents which puts us in first place, with 20deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, according to the World Health Organization,?”the Church asks in its editorial in its weekly publication, Camino whichcirculates every Sunday

It said that when aloved loses their life in an instant is a heartbreak for those who become suddenlyaware that a child, sibling or parent ceases to exist, without saying goodbye.

The church said a solutionis urgently needed to deal with what it called a drama, by “attacking thecauses of this chaos.”

"Our streets,highways and roads cannot continue being the shortest distance on the journey betweenlife and death."
