More transit agents needed on roads, COE suggests

Santo Domingo.– Emergency Operations Center (COE) director Juan Manuel Mendez said Monday that more transit agents (Amet) are needed on highways and roads to help reduce the recklessness of drivers who are involved in fatal accidents resulting in deaths and injuries.

Mendez said there are only about 2,000 AMET agents assigned to roads at present, and suggested the amount should be doubled because the situation requires it.

The COE director pointed out that traffic accidents in the Dominican Republic cause more deaths than armed conflicts do in other countries.

Road Safety Education

He stressed that road safety education must be a compulsory subject in Dominican schools. "It is vital to do this," he said.

Mendez also announced that the next phase of the holiday safety operation starts Wednesday at 2:00 pm on the occasion of the New Year festivities.
