DR, Western hemisphere’s most dangerous place to drive

Santo Domingo.– The World Health Organization reported thatthe Dominican Republic is the Western hemisphere’s most dangerous place todrive, and 15th worst in the world, according to The Globalstatus report on road safety 2015,reflecting information from 180 countries.

In the country each year 29 out of every 100,000 people diein road accidents, says the report which calls for urgent action to achieve theambitious target for road safety reflected in the newly adopted 2030 Agenda forSustainable Development: halving the global number of deaths and injuries fromroad traffic crashes by 2020.

The Dominican Republic registered more roads deaths per capita thanany other country in the world in 2013, but it has since been surpassed by Libya, Thailand and several African nations.

But that doesn’tmean the situation is improving, for death rate is still on the rise, up from21.6 per 100,000 people in 2010.
