Santo Domingo.- The smuggling of as many as 140 tarantulasfrom Uruguay to Dominican Republic sent through the postal service has been detectedin recent weeks, in violation of the laws of both nations.

Uruguay’s Clemente Estable Biological Research Institute onJanuary 21 announced the discovery of 60 tarantulas in three envelopes headed tothe Dominican Republic,.

On Monday Dominican Post Office director Modesto Guzmansaid 80 tarantulas had been seized, which were headed to the northwesternprovince of Valverde.
