Agents seize nearly a ton of drugs near south coast

Santo Domingo.- The National DrugsControl Agency (DNCD) on Monday said it seized 984 bricks (nearly one ton) ofdrugs presumably cocaine near the coast of Barahona (south), headed to the USor Europe.

DNCD spokesman Dario Medrano saidthe drug was found hidden in a compartment of a boat with seven men Hondurannationals, who were arrested.

He said the operation involving thefreighter "Precon Express I" took place 10 nautical miles sought ofBarahona, helped by the Dominican Navy and the US Coast Guard.

In a press conference, Medranosaid the confiscation was the result of intelligence work by authorities, whichinvestigate the possible local contacts with the seven foreigners.

The official added that the Honduransform part of a drug trafficking ring that include Venezuelans and Dominicans who’vesmuggled large quantities of drugs into the country by sea, headed to Europeand the US.
