Woman of the Year runs for deputy major of the capital

Santo Domingo.- The ruling party’s (PLD) candidate for NationalDistrict mayor, Roberto Salcedo on Monday announced civil engineer Francina Hungriaas his running mate in his reelection bid for the May 15 elections.

Hungria, who lost her vision after being shot in the faceduring an assault, heads the foundation that bears her name, and has headedactivities to help visually impaired Dominicans.

She was shot and assaulted on November 23, 2012 near herhome in the capital.

I recognition of her valor and community service, newspaperDiario Libre selected her Woman of the Year in 2013.

On February 17 a National District court sentenced herassailants José Miguel Vidal Féliz and José Manuel Arias 30 to years in prison,and Melvin Pérez to 20 years.
