70% of Dominican registered voters cast a ballot: Observers

Santo Domingo.- The South American Union of Nations’ (UNASUR)electoral observers mission on Monday said 70 percent of Dominican Republic’s over 6.1million registered voters cast a ballot in Sunday’s general elections.

In a preliminary report on the elections delivered to theCentral Electoral Board, mission spokesman Jorge Taiana also said the delay inthe vote count was more striking in Santo Domingo, where technicians lacked theinstructions to operate the equipment.

He noted however that the voting went smoothly once it beganjust after 7am.

He said the UNASUR mission will render its final reportwith observations and recommendations on the polling within 15 days.
