Ex-LA Dodger slugger again at center of major city’s trash crisis

San Cristobal, Dominican Republic.- For the second time in asmany years crews from several government agencies arrived to intervene the cityon Thursday, and began collecting trash and other solid waste, to preventdiseases.

The authorities intervened the municipality as inhabitantsresorted to makeshift trash dumps on the streets of the various sectors, which posea health risk.

Since early Thursday heavy equipment sent by the ministriesof Public Works, Environment, Public Health and the Army collect waste in theheels of a dispute within the San Cristobal City Council, headed by the outgoingmayor and former Los Angeles Dodges slugger Raul Mondesi.

The impasse prompted San Cristobal province governor JulioCesar Diaz to head the cleanup operations, accompanied by Environment minister BautistaRojas, among other officials.

For its part, the company Dionisio Ramirez also joined thetrash collection effort with its own funds.
