West Santiago residents picket Congress, demand township

Santiago.- A committee of people is currently picketing infront of Congress on Tuesday to demand that the Senate approve the bill tocreate Santiago Oeste township, despite fierce opposition by numerous sectors against the creation ofmore municipalities

The protesters, who demand the debate of the issue in thecurrent legislature, say the bill to create the new municipality in Santiago provincehas already passed through the Senate Municipal Development Committee andadheres to established rules.

They note the law must be passed before July 26, when thelegislature concludes, and if they fail they “would feel that our efforts havebeen utterly scorned.”

Coincidentally, the last town to be incorporated as amunicipality was Baitoa, just 15 kilometers south of the proposed township.
