Santo Domingo.- The government on Wednesday militarized the Duquesa trash dump with Environmental Protection Service agents, to avert a garbage crisis in Greater Santo Domingo.

Moreover, the Environment Ministry fined landfill contractor Lajun Corp. RD$16.0 million for violating Environment and Natural Resources Law 64-00.

In a press conference Environment Minister Francisco Dominguez said Lajun failed to apply the management and environmental suitability program which accompanies the environmental permit.

“We are also proceeding with the gathering of data on the ownership and legal status of the Duquesa landfill, in order to identify some type of criminal offense and request an investigation by the Public Office of the Prosecutor,” Dominguez said accompanied by Environment officials.
