Trash dump stench: Govt. faces US$300.0M lawsuit

Landfill

Santo Domingo.- The Government will contract a law firm specialized in international arbitration to litigate the lawsuit filed by Lajún Corporation, which demands that the Dominican State pay over US$300.0 million for damages and violation of the Free Trade Agreement.

Lajun was the contractor of the Duquesa landfill, where the irregularities led to the cancelling of the contract.

Executive Branch legal advisor, Flavio Darío Espinal made the announcement Tues. and called the lawsuit inadmissible, for which they are willing to show that they are right.

He said the Dominican State will have a strong defense, “so that the public interest prevails” for which they’ve established a collaboration mechanism involving several ministries and municipalities.

“I want to reiterate that the population must be confident that the Dominican Government in this case, like any other of another nature, but especially in this case, will do everything in its power to carry out a rigorous defense, a strong defense in which the public interest prevail,” the official told the press in the National Palace.
