‘It’s up to women’ to decide whether they want children

Santo Domingo.- The issue of decriminalize abortion on Wed. buzzed the public hearings of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (CIDH), whose president defended a women’s right to decide whether they want to have children.

Margarette May Macaulay called “an abomination” when a girl is raped by a pedophile and then prosecuted for abortion.

Macaulay’s statement came when the IACHR panel debated the issue of women’s right to sexual and reproductive health in Argentina.

Before the session, Macaulay said women have the right to decide if they want to have children and it’s up to the State to guarantee that right, especially for girls and adolescents.

The panel affirmed that it will be up to the people’s representatives in Congress to decide whether to decriminalize abortion, and that all sectors will be heard in the debates, adding that he reception of proposals on the issue will conclude in June.
