US$170.0M fines on corrupt Brazilian firms will improve prisons

Santo Domingo.- Justice minister Jean Rodriguez on Thurs. announced improvements for 40 prisons and the construction of a new facility to ease overcrowding at the notorious La Victoria Penitentiary.

He said the remodeling and construction that will cost US$170.0 million will be tendered.

He said the money to rebuild and revamp the prisons will be from the fines levied on the Brazilian construction companies Odebrecht and Embraer, both of which confessed to bribing Dominican Republic officials.

In a press conference, Rodríguez said the entire prison reform process will be ready in 2020.
