Quake expert says don’t fret, prep

Major fault lines.

Santo Domingo.- Santo Domingo State University (UASD) Seismology Center director Eugenio Polanco, warned Sun. that the country registers as many as 1,200 quakes a year, and when a significant tremor can occur is unpredictable.

Interviewed by Federico Méndez on Santo Domingo TV, the expert stressed that the Dominican Republic and Haiti are located in an area prone to earthquakes.

Polanco said that instead of being alarm about the country’s seismic characteristics, measures should be taken so that when the time comes, situations that pose a safety risk can be prevented. “Until now science does not predict the time when an earthquake will occur, but has identified the places where this phenomenon can happen.”
