Dominican Navy stops 25 Puerto Rico-bound boatpeople

Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Navy on Sun. intercepted an illegal crossing with more than 25 people on board a yola type boat near Nagua township (northeast)

It said the boat of about 27 feet was intercepted in Rio Barracote, when they were about to embark on the dangerous crossing to Puerto Rico.

In a statement the Navy said the group, when they noticed the sailor’s presence most of them dove into the water, but arrested six men.

“It’s remarkable the number of illegal trips that try to leave day and night, trying to outwit the authorities, but the Dominican Navy has strengthened the controls on the coasts to prevent the departure of fragile boats with people on board.”
