Crime wave ousts Dominican Republic’s antinarcotics chief

Santo Domingo.- President Danilo Medina on Fri. fired general Eugenio Matos as head of the National Drugs Control Directorate (DNCD) replaced by Navy rear admiral, Felix Alburquerque, according to an executive issued yesterday.

Matos’ ouster comes amid mounting questions into the DNCD and the National Police’s role in the recent wave of drug-related violent crimes that left several people dead including a police colonel in a confusing shootout at a drug house in Baní (south).

Insecurity

The issue of citizen insecurity on Friday prompted widespread concern among the various sectors of society, which demand specific actions by the government to put a halt to the spate if crimes.
