US Coast Guard stops 29 Dominican boatpeople near Puerto Rico

San Juan.- The United States Coast Guard intercepted 29 Dominican boatpeople, including a possible smuggler, trying to reach Puerto Rico’s coast in two separate operations, it said Wed. in a statement.

Two of the Dominican citizens intercepted face charges of reiterated  illegal attempted entry into United States territory, while the other 27 will be repatriated to their country of origin.

The detention of immigrants was the result of the joint efforts by several federal agencies, including the Coast Guard and the Caribbean Border Inter-Agency Group (CBIG).

“Excellent coordination between the Coast Guard and other partner agencies was critical for our teams to complete the two arrests safely,” said US Coast Guard Commander Luis Rodriguez.
