Govt. touts its ‘humanized’ jails at UN forum

Geneva.- The Justice Ministry on Sat. touted Dominican Republic’s progress at the UN’s Human Rights Council in Geneva, Switzerland, where it stressed the creation of the Penitentiary System Humanization Plan, “to guarantee human rights to all persons who are deprived of liberty in the country.”
In the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) to Dominican Republic’s Human Rights compliance, the entity said that despite the progress on its Penitentiary Model Management, there are still many opportunities for improvement, especially in areas related to the treatment, education, rehabilitation and reintegration of inmates.
“Faced with this pressing reality the Attorney General’s Office, under the direction of the Attorney General Jean Rodríguez, has been working hard with this First Plan of Humanization of the Penitentiary System,” the Justice Ministry said in a statement.
