Public Health calls on the population to adopt measures to counteract the heat wave

Maintain hydration and keep cool

In reaction to the heat wave that affects the country, the Ministry of Health urged the population to take the necessary measures to avoid health problems.

For convenience, the health entity recommends the use of lightweight, loose and light-colored clothes, also encourages the use of sunscreen and as far as possible move to cool and ventilated places and minimal exposure to the sun’s rays during the holiday of Holy Week.

The institution urged citizens to consume fruits and vegetables and drink plenty of water, even when they are not thirsty. Additionally, it urged the avoidance of eating too many salty, overly-spiced or fatty and hot meals, they are not recommended. The consumption of alcoholic drinks, caffeinated or very sugary drinks, sweets or candies is also not advisable.

“The consumption of fruits, vegetables, and other nutrients would be the ideal foods for the population , because they quench thirst, ease hunger and contribute to keeping the skin well nourished and hydrated. It also helps to avoid anger and arguments,” explains the institution in a press release.

He pointed out that if a person feels dizzy or faints, they should lie down in a cool place, indoors, drink a rehydrating drink, but never hot infusions, nor very sweet.

It also suggests going to the nearest health center, if you feel other symptoms of heat such as headache, fatigue, intense thirst, nausea and vomiting, muscle cramps, as well as seizures and heavy sweating.

Similarly, the entity asks the population to avoid the use of alcoholic beverages – as alcohol dehydrates – and pay special attention to vulnerable people such as children, pregnant women, the elderly, people with chronic diseases, as well as those with some type of disability.
