A political showdown looms over Dominican Republic Congress

Santo Domingo.- Chamber of Deputies president, Radhames Camacho, on Wed. convened an unusual session for Friday, heightening speculation that a bill to amend the Constitution and pave the way for president Danilo Medina’s reelection.

Yesterday presidential candidacy hopeful of the major opposition party (PRM), Luis Abinader announced a protest in front of Congress at 9am Friday, “to resist a government compromise to ignore the Constitution in an attempt to impose another reelection of president Danilo Medina.”

“Today, despite repeated pronouncements not only from us and our party, but also from most sectors of national life against the reelection attempts, they already have the draft of the bill to amend the Constitution prepared and signed to be submitted to the Senate, and they have called the Chamber of Deputies in a very unusual way for next Friday,” Abinader said in a press conference at his campaign headquarters.
