Precedent: Regulator slaps fines of US$11K for making robocalls

Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Telecom Institute (Indotel) on Mon. set a precedent by fining various debt collectors for violating the “Standard that regulates the use of public telecommunications services for debt collection purposes.”

The fines levied at the first public hearing for violating the rule ranged from RD$195,756, or two charges for non-compliance, to RD$587,268 (US$11,680), or six charges for non-compliance.

“Standard No. 010-16 regulates to whom and where calls can be made to collect a debt, as well as the number of calls and their schedules,” the entity said in a statement.
