20% of the trash dragged by the rivers is plastic

Santo Domingo.- Around 20% of the trash dragged by the Ozama, Isabela, Yuna and Yaque del Norte rivers is plastic, mostly gallons and bottles, and foam.

Environment Ministry Solid Waste program director Francisco Flores Chang based the percentage on the type of garbage that is collected during the cleanups that have been done on the coasts.

He said that the Ozama, Isabela, Yuna and Yaque del Norte are the four most polluted rivers in the country. “They drag all kinds of garbage, including appliances, but the plastic is more noticeable because it is floating.”
