Cedimat opens oncology and hematology center

President Luis Abinader yesterday led the inauguration of the Integral Hemato-oncology Center of the Diagnostic and Advanced Medicine and Medical Conference and Telemedicine Centers (Cedimat).

The objective of the new unit is to expand diagnostic, treatment, and hospitalization services to improve the health conditions of patients with hematology and oncology-related diseases.

The President toured the facilities together with the First Lady, Raquel Arbaje; the general director of Cedimat, Milagros Ureña; the vice-minister of Public Health, José Matos; the first vice-president of the Board of Trustees of the health center, José Luis Corripio, and the second vice-president, Marisol Vicens, among others.

During her participation, the director of Cedimat detailed that the project had an investment of US$4.6 million, including the physical infrastructure.

Statistics

Ureña indicated that in the Dominican Republic, each year, there are some 20,800 new cases of cancer, of which 52% are in men and 48% in women.

The most frequent cases in men are prostate, lung, colorectal, stomach, and liver cancer, while in women, they are breast, cervix, colorectal, lung, and stomach cancer. The prevalence is about 54,400 people, with slightly more than 10,000 yearly mortality.

Facilities

The center is located on the sixth floor of Cedimat’s Cardiovascular Building. It has 20 fully equipped rooms, 12 outpatient treatment units, four medical offices, a minimally invasive procedure area, a nurses’ area, and a meeting room per international standards.

Also present at the ceremony were Marisol Vicens, second vice-president, Rafael Bisonó, Oscar Villanueva, Víctor Méndez Saba, Celso Pérez, Ana Isabel Cáceres, and Jatnna Tavárez, as well as the General Director Milagros Ureña; the Medical Director, Jorge Marte, managers of the different areas of CEDIMAT and related people.

Heliport

During the inauguration, Father Juan Carlos Ramírez Hurtado blessed the heliport, which will contribute to improving the medical response in emergency cases.
