One-year-old boy dies of suffocation after choking on a piece of sweet potato in Santiago

A one-year-old boy died of suffocation after choking on a piece of sweet potato in the Santiago Oeste municipal district’s Cienfuegos sector. The baby was identified as Starling Gálvez, the 28-year-old son of Denis Gálvez. After his mother gave him the food, the infant died.

The boy was rescued by locals while suffocating and taken to a hospital, where he died. The baby lived in a pension on Sergio Hernández Street, in the aforementioned neighborhood, with his parents. The infant’s body was transported to the National Institute of Forensic Sciences (Inacif) for legal purposes.

The National Police and the Public Ministry both launched investigations into the case, which caused widespread distress in Cienfuegos.
