Unfortunate car accident causes the death of a child

The family described the death of a one-and-a-half-year-old boy as an unfortunate accident. He died after being hit by a vehicle that was going in reverse in the La Herradura sector, southwest of Santiago de los Caballeros. Sitting under a tarpaulin in front of the residence where the remains of Dionis Santana Peña were exposed, relatives, friends, and neighbors expressed their sadness at the tragedy. “This has been too much for everyone. We ask God to give us a lot of strength,” said Dionis Santana, the boy’s paternal grandfather.

The event occurred when the driver reversed the vehicle, while the child was playing in the area. The infant’s maternal grandmother, Lidia Peña, was injured trying to rescue him when she noticed that the car was moving. The 60-year-old lady has a blow to her right arm and shoulder, whose ailments she said she will attend to after her grandson receives a Christian burial. “Tomorrow, God willing, I’m going to get an x-ray to determine if I have a fracture,” she said between sobs.

Witnesses to the accident indicated that upon realizing the fact, the driver ran away terrified and visibly nervous, leaving the vehicle abandoned. Minutes later, the man, whose name has not been offered, turned himself in at the headquarters of the General Directorate of Traffic Safety and Land Transport (Digesett).
