Tragic shipwreck off Nisibón: victim identified, search for missing continues

La Altagracia, DR.- The victim of the tragic shipwreck near Nisibón, where two individuals were rescued and several detained, has been identified as 28-year-old Noelia María, hailing from Villa Riva in the Duarte province.

In the meantime, the Dominican Navy has disclosed the identities of two crew members involved in the incident: 49-year-old Alejandro Adames and 36-year-old Roberto Díaz Santos, both residents of Cotuí.

Survivors revealed to authorities that the ill-fated journey was intended for Puerto Rico, and each participant paid organizers a fee ranging between $1,000 and $1,500. Regrettably, these organizers remain unidentified.

Intensive search efforts, led by rescue organizations and the Navy, are underway to locate potential survivors or victims in the Atlantic Ocean waters around the Nisibón area. Approximately 24 individuals have been reported missing by concerned relatives who have gathered at the scene of the tragedy.

The vessel, described as a handcrafted boat approximately 24 feet long and blue in color, may have capsized due to the strong waves prevalent in the region. The boat was equipped with a 60 HP Yamaha engine and a 40 HP Mercury engine, both uncovered. Rescue operations and search activities for those missing at sea are concentrated around Punta del Coco beach in Nisibón, where the unfortunate incident occurred.

I’m not certain ‘shipwreck’ is the term I’d use to describe a handcrafted boat capsizing but either way, prayers for those still missing will be found unharmed.
