US and Canada seek assistance from DR for their embassies in Haiti

Santo Domingo.- The United States and Canada have reached out to the Dominican Republic seeking assistance for their diplomatic personnel stranded in Haiti due to escalating violence fueled by criminal gangs controlling most of the neighboring country’s territory.

Both governments have formally requested permission from the Ministry of Defense to bring personnel and equipment, including aircraft, into Dominican territory to support their diplomatic missions in Haiti.

A statement issued by the Dominican Ministry of Defense confirms their collaboration in facilitating efficient evacuation operations to achieve set objectives.

The Dominican Government has already permitted other nations and international organizations, such as the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, the European Union, the United Nations, and various embassies, to evacuate their diplomatic staff from the turmoil-stricken Haiti. To date, 296 individuals from embassies and international organizations have utilized Dominican territory to depart from Haiti.

Meanwhile, Spain stands prepared to evacuate its nationals from Haiti if the situation demands it. Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, affirmed Spain’s readiness for evacuation, stating that plans have been in place for several days to evacuate Spanish nationals and embassy personnel if necessary. Despite the ongoing challenging circumstances, Albares emphasized that evacuation is not yet imperative, but Spain remains vigilant and prepared for any eventualities.

Albares also highlighted Spain’s commitment to supporting Haiti by announcing a three-million-euro contribution toward a multinational force deployed in the country. Spain intends to actively participate in this initiative as part of its broader commitment to assisting Haiti during this tumultuous period.
