Santo Domingo.- Starting this Saturday, May 18, the sale of alcoholic beverages will be prohibited, beginning 24 hours before the vote.

The sale of alcohol can resume 12 hours after the electoral process concludes.

This is stipulated in Article 233 of Law 20-23, which states: “From twenty-four hours before the election, no alcoholic beverages may be sold or distributed for any purpose until twelve hours after the voting ends.”

Hotels in tourist areas are exempt from this prohibition, provided they are registered with the Central Electoral Board and recognized by the official organizations that group these establishments.

One may be able to reasonably surmise, boxes of beer and liquors purchased before the prohibition have been set aside for private consumption. Election fiestas are not dry.

There as no shortage of green bottles on my drive through “voting neighbourhoods” yesterday. Never saw police. But go to Los Corales and Cortecito where nobody can vote…the police watching those places like hawks.

Why? ….to hinder a political fanatic to come under the influence thus making a fool of himself and party by his doing something stupid or dangerous at a polling place or in public.

No liquor sales serve to frustrate buyers of votes who seek to pray upon weaknesses of intoxication.

Who wants the foulness of a drunk standing in a polling line upsetting other people?

No liquor sales, less risks.
