Government to expand nationwide security camera network

Santo Domingo.- Minister of the Presidency Joel Santos Echavarría announced on Monday that the Government plans to increase the number of security cameras across the country. These cameras have played a crucial role in resolving numerous criminal cases and identifying offenders nationwide.

Santos Echavarría highlighted that since August 2020, 1,500 new cameras have been installed. Over the next 12 months, an additional 1,700 cameras will be installed through the National Emergency Assistance and Security System (9-1-1), under the direction of Colonel Randolfo Rijo Gómez.

During the weekly Citizen Security Plan meeting, led by President Luis Abinader at the National Police Officers Club, the minister mentioned that agreements are being forged with various private companies to integrate their security cameras into the system.

These agreements will enable authorities to access real-time footage, enhancing the ability to respond to criminal incidents swiftly and strengthening community security, thereby ensuring more effective surveillance nationwide.

It is not mentioned, but it is a good chance the Chinese are providing the equipment and technology. China has a large security camera network, Skynet, 600 million cameras in all areas of its country.
