Abinader announces Punta Cana as host for next Summit of the Americas

Washington.- President Luis Abinader addressed the 27th Annual Conference of the Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean (CAF), reaffirming his commitment to democracy and sustainable development. He emphasized that true democracy is built on the defense of human rights, which protect individual dignity and serve as the foundation for political legitimacy.

He highlighted his recent constitutional reform proposal aimed at limiting the presidency to two consecutive terms, preventing any future leader from extending their rule. The proposal includes a “petrous clause” that would make it difficult to amend the constitution regarding presidential term limits, ensuring that the government remains civil, republican, democratic, and representative. Abinader described this as a preventive measure against political leaders seeking to extend their power for personal gain.

President Abinader also discussed the upcoming Tenth Summit of the Americas, set to take place in Punta Cana during the first week of December 2025. He emphasized that his government is working closely with the OAS Summits Secretariat and the Summit Implementation Review Group to ensure the event’s success, which he views as a key commitment.
