San Juan residents demand environmental impact studies for Los Romero Mine

San Juan, DR.- Under the slogan “San Juan Deserves to Know,” various social and peasant organizations mobilized to urge the government to conduct environmental impact studies for the proposed Los Romero mine in San Juan province. Residents of all ages participated in a march, occupying the streets to demand transparency and proper procedures regarding the mine’s feasibility.

Antonio Fermín, president of the San Juan Agricultural Development Consortium, expressed his opposition to the mine but emphasized the need for thorough studies due to community uncertainty about its potential benefits. A socioeconomic study indicated that the Los Romero mine could generate 46,000 million pesos in direct taxes and voluntary donations, while also creating 6,000 jobs and contributing approximately 116 million pesos per month to the local economy.
