Reddish sky captivates Dominican Republic’s dawn

Santo Domingo.- A striking reddish sky greeted the Dominican Republic on Tuesday morning, captivating early risers. Meteorologist Jean Suriel explained that the phenomenon resulted from the interaction between a trough and the remnants of cold front number 1. The sky began to turn orange and then reddish around 6 AM, just before the sun rose at 6:53 AM in Santo Domingo, creating an optical spectacle as the sun’s first rays reflected off the cloud cover.

This natural display is attributed to Rayleigh scattering, a process in which light is scattered by atmospheric particles, causing the sky to appear red, orange, and yellow during sunrise and sunset. Suriel noted that, as the sun approaches the horizon, shorter wavelengths like blue and green scatter, leaving behind the warm hues of orange and red.

The brief but stunning spectacle serves as a reminder of the remarkable optical effects produced by atmospheric changes, showcasing the beauty of natural phenomena.
